Christmas - Putting the Christ back in Christians.
Some Christians, God bless them everyone, can turn a perfectly nice holiday like Christmas into a Bah Humbug Fest. You know, Santa is Satan, Elves are demons, the secular humanists have given us "Xmas," lights on homes are runways for UFOs, trees are druid priests in disguise, the snow is cocaine, snowmen are Halloween throwbacks - whoa! sorry, got carried away. (See how easy it is?) This month we link up to several articles dealing with Christmas and Christians.
• One is a straight out "C'mon let's grow up" essay by R. C. Sproul, Marley's Message to Scrooge.
• Another is a more subtle, modern-day Screwtape Letter, The Spirits of Christmas Present.
• We also have a tongue-in-cheek look at how Santa can do all things he says he can if he has been given access to extra dimensions.
• And one more on the Christmas Star and the science behind it. What could it have been?

School of the Arts
There's good "Christian" art and then there's Thomas Kincaide. Kidding! Sorta. Read from here an essay about what makes art from Christians good or not. At the least it will help us to see the arts from "spiritual people" from a different perspective. And hopefully we will start to expect more from them, and not just accept their work as "good" because they are Christian.
And then there's this movie, Vera Drake, which has been praised by critics from the prolife side of the abortion issue. Apparently the director has this little lady (pictured here) performing abortions on the side because she cares about the pregnant girls so much. But the movie isn't one of those "abortion is the easy answer" sort of propaganda things. It shows, as unbiased as can be shown with this issue, apparently, the emotional nuclear bomb that abortion can be. Check it out from here.
Alex doesn't live here anymore.
Maybe Alexandr Solzhenitsyn doesn't look like the happiest man in the world. That could be because he grew up in the USSR and spent ten years in their idea of reform school, the Gulag. And then was sent to exile after serving his term. And then was chucked from his country because he spoke up against the regime.
Yeah, maybe he's seen and experienced a lot of things that makes him sad. (During all this suffering he became a Christian - a great story in itself.)
So you'd think he would just embrace western capitalism now, huh? It has to be better than the Stalinist Hell on Earth he came from!
Not really. Read from here his timeless address to graduates at the 1978 Harvard Graduation ceremony. It will make you think twice about our free society, and think that maybe unchecked freedom is not the best thing for humans.
Miscellaneous Strangeness.
Just a couple things that show we are a unique species on this planet:
Fish are People, Too PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals now have a campaign to save the fish. Yes, the fish. Here's a quote to get you ready: “I never eat anyone I know personally. I wouldn’t eat a grouper any more than I’d eat a cocker spaniel. They’re so good-natured, so curious. You know, fish really are sensitive, they have personalities, they hurt when they’re wounded.” If PETA finds out that plants are people, too, we'll have nothing to eat but sand. G
o here for a real fish story. And don't forget to listen to the late Linda McCarthey's well thought and articulate defense of PETA's stand.
Deep Losers Dept. There are people who are actually suffering from post election stress syndrome (no joke) by virtue of Mr. Kerry's loss. They are getting therapy for it, as well. Here's a quote: “I had one friend tell me he’s never been so depressed and angry in his life,” Schooler said. “I observed patients threatening to leave the country or staring listlessly into space. They were emotionally paralyzed, shocked and devastated.” OK, want to read more? Go here, but bring a box of Kleenex. And then take a look at HelpThemLeave.com for one remedy these people have open to them. (By the way, who doubts some right-wingers would be suffering the same fate if Mr. Bush had lost?)
Guys have Rights, Too This is a lot lighter than above, a set of Guy's Rules from our buddy at GodandScience.org. Go here and have fun with it, especially you testosterone-dripping males out there!
New unorthodox shirts for the ladies.
How stupid are we? (Don't answer that!) We kinda didn't know kinda that there are girls' shirts, too, and that we could make them. D'oh!
So, we made a limited number of girlie shirts in black or dark green, SMLXL, to fulfill your desire to spread the lovingly rebellious, counter-christian-culture, I am a Christian with a brain and a heart! swordandspirit message all over this dark world of ours.
They are here finally. If you want one go here and find out about how to get one!

Fee Fie Foe Forum!
We have a new section in the Forum, Life Issues, which deals specifically with abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research and the like. But we refuse to include the possibility of Hildi leaving Trading Spaces as a "life issue." Sorry. Go here and contribute!!!

Last minute quick thoughts...

  • The new U2 album has some great songs on it! And a lot are spiritual, that is, they're spiritual if you are like me and try and see spiritual hints in everything they do. (I know, Get a life.)
  • Thanks for voting!
  • Pray the NHL can reach an agreement so the One True Sport can start again. ;)
  • Read groovy newspaper articles on the heavens here written by some guy at swordandspirit.
  • Go to the new Reasons To Believe San Diego website!!! ;)

Thanks!
Again, we need you in order to exist. If even a tenth of you got involved with forums or spreading the news via word of mouth or shirts or linking our site, we could change things around us in ways we never dreamed of. And through all this (naive ideology alert!) Christians could be strengthened and challenged, nonChristians can see Christians as they should be, and above all our loving God will be glorified and pleased with His children. Can you help?

Have the best Christmas!!!
